I think during the workshop there was some discussion of doing both the viral implant and the aspiration/lens implant on the same day, am I correct? Now that I have done practice versions of each it seems that the aspiration might in some unclear way compromize the injection, just given how extreme an operation the aspiration is.

Have people had good experience with doing both on the same day? Or would you say it's best to just separate them by a week?

Thanks Brendon

We have had success doing it both ways. In general we get pretty good expression if you do the virus on the same day, but the expression of the virus is slightly less. Presumably, we are aspirating out a bit of the virus, even if you wait 30 minutes between injection and aspiration, or the virus just doesn't get taken up as well possibly because of the immune response.

We have generally found it easier to do the injections and implants on different days, but it definitely works both way. For deep brain structures, you will probably want to do the injection on the same day to make the targeting more consistent.
