Yes, I saw the pixel size is much smaller. For our application, the weight is the main concern, so we are looking into ways to decrease the weight of the mini scope, and we can compromise a bit on the resolution.

I will look into the E2C CMOS sensor, and I am definitely interested in a bare die implementation. I have actually found this USB camera which consists of a LEDs, GPIO, EEPROM, and bare CMOS sensor and weighs about 0.22 g. The circuit uses a flexible 2 layer PCB design, which I think also decreases the weight even more.

it iIs actually just an off-the-shelf endoscope. very cheap for 20 bucks I bought on amazon. I opened it up and ended up with the parts I described above. I had also to get rid of two pieces of anodized metal separating the flex PCB.
